Most of what a shoot produces never makes it to the screen

Scenes cut in the edit. Sound recordings never used. Sets and costumes put into storage — or thrown out — once the shoot wraps. Projects left unfinished because the budget ran out. Films that screened at one festival and were never seen anywhere again.
None of it is spoiled. It has simply fallen out of circulation.
The Sustainers Film Festival is built on that distinction. The four strands of our programme are four different answers to the same question: what do we already have that we can put back into circulation?
New Circulation brings newly made films to an audience. Re-Circulation opens a second life for work that has screened before but never found visibility. The Unfinished brings projects still waiting to be completed together with people looking to collaborate. And Film Compost – The Second Cut creates a pool where unused footage becomes the raw material for new work.
We should clear up one likely misunderstanding at the outset: this festival does not celebrate low budgets. Scarcity is not a virtue in itself. What interests us is not how few the means were, but whether the relationship with those means was creative and responsible.
We hold ourselves to the same measure. The festival's printed material, transport, catering and waste are all part of the programme too. We will measure what we use and how much of it, and publish the results afterwards. It would be strange for a festival that talks about sustainability not to show its own balance sheet.
Films do not need to be about nature. How a film was made, where it goes, and what it leaves behind are interesting enough questions on their own.
Nothing in cinema is single-use.
